The Ribe Viking Center

Doing some research on Viking clothes, I stumbled across the web site of the Ribe Viking Center in Denmark. This is a living history center, on the site of an actual Viking trading fair and farm.

The interpreters practice a wide range of medieval crafts, from spinning to making chain mail.

They have a wonderful reconstructed longhouse where they reenact the life of a wealthy farming family.

Their priestess or völva, reenacting pagan rites.

The accounts of cooking are especially detailed and fascinating -- if you want to recreate a Viking feast, I suggest you start here. Above, making porridge in an earthenware pot set by the fire. They provide recipes.

Preparing and eating the summer solstice feast.

Eggs in brine, with mustard sauce -- which must be the ancestor of our deviled eggs.

Something else to add to my list of things to do in Denmark, should I ever get there.
