May Flowers

It has been a perfect weekend to putter in the garden, and I have taken full advantage. The clematis in the herb garden is looking very fine.

My irises are coming back. Last year they suffered a big die-off and didn't bloom at all, but this year I have three healthy-looking plants and two are blooming nicely.

One of my self-seeded white columbine. These have been coming up on their own for at least five years, the descendants of lovely blue and yellow ones that I bought from the garden center. Since wild columbine is red, I don't understand why these reversions aren't red, too. I guess the domestic ones have some new mutations that make them fundamentally different from the wild ones.
